Was Herschel Walker part of the NFL’s most legendary trade?

In 1989 Jimmy Johnson, coach of the Cowboys, came to a decision: his team had a lot of problems and the only way to fix them was to trade their best player for good compensation so they could build a winning team. And that’s how, after a walk with various members of his staff, he came to the decision: Herschel Walker had to be traded.

Those interested were not lacking. The Giants were among the first teams to express interest, but Dallas didn’t consider them because they were divisional rivals. The Atlanta Falcons also wanted to make the trade but backed out over Walker’s salary demands. Eventually, the Browns emerged as the most interested team, offering up two first-round picks and three second-round picks.

The Browns’ offer was already very good, but Jimmy Johnson decided to play one last card: offer Walker directly to the Vikings, letting them know he was about to take Cleveland’s offer. Mike Lynn, the Vikings’ general manager at the time, decided to outbid the Browns and close the deal for what he considered to be the “missing piece” for his team to win the Super Bowl.

Trade terms

This is how the deal was finalized: Dallas would send Herschel Walker and three draft picks (third round and tenth round of 1990 plus a third round of 1991) in exchange for five players, three draft picks, and five other conditional draft picks.

How was the NFL affected by Herschel Walker’s trade?

Dallas was filled with players and draft picks with that trade. The five players were RB Darrin Nelson, CB Issiac Holt, DE Alex Stewart, and LBs Jesse Solomon and David Howard. They also received the Vikings’ first, second, and sixth round picks in the 1990 Draft and five other picks, all of which were conditional on the drafted players being cut: if Dallas cut Solomon they would receive the first-round pick of the Vikings in 1991; if it was Howard, the 1991 second-round pick; if they cut Holt, the first round in 1992; in the case of Nelson it would be in the second round in 1992 and with Stewart, it would be in the third round, also in 1992.

Interestingly, Darrin Nelson refused to report to the Cowboys, so the team agreed to send him to the Chargers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 1990 Draft. That pick went to the Vikings since they had to give up their pick. It was a second-round pick in 1992 because Nelson never played in Dallas.

Jimmy Johnson subsequently cut Alex Stewart (thus earning the Vikings’ 1992 third-round pick) and later informed his assistant coaches that Solomon, Howard, and Holt would not be fielded by the Cowboys for draft picks in its place.

The impact of the trade on the Cowboys’ history

Taking all of those picks gave Johnson a lot of flexibility to move around in the Draft. Several of those selections were used to move up the ranks and take players that he believed would serve him well.

Remembering that in 1989 they had taken QB Troy Aikman with the first pick. from the University of Florida.

In 1991 they used the Vikings’ first-round pick to move up to the No. 1 overall pick and take DT Russell Maryland. As part of that deal, they received two more picks, which became CB Kevin Smith and safety Darren Woodson.

So, in the end, the Cowboys got several players to give them depth and four starters: Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith and Darren Woodson. They, along with other elements that had already arrived in Dallas (such as Aikman and Irvin) were key to the Cowboys winning three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s.
