Hasan Piker- Twitch Career and Controversies

Hasan Piker

Hasan Piker, popularly known as HasanAbi, is a Turkish-American Twitch streamer and liberal political spokesperson. He was born on July 25, 1991. He has previously held positions as a broadcast journalist, producer, and columnist at The Young Turks and HuffPost. He is one of the most popular and well-liked Twitch streams right now, covering news, playing a range of video games, and debating politics from a socialist standpoint. His lack of physical fitness and his scepticism toward Islam, he claims, led to bullying while he was attending a Turkish public school. Piker moved back to the country and enrolled at the University of Miami before transferring to Rutgers University, where he earned a double degree in political science and communication studies and graduated with honours in 2013.

Piker worked as an intern for The Young Turks, a progressive news programme and network co-founded by his uncle Cenk Uygur, in 2013, his final year of college. Piker was employed by the network’s ad sales and business division after graduating. When a fill-in was required, he volunteered to host the show and eventually went to host and producer.

The Breakdown, a TYT Network video series that appeared on Facebook in 2016 and offered left-leaning political commentary geared toward millennial Bernie Sanders supporters, was created and hosted by Piker. The show received a nomination for “Best Web Series” at the 10th Shorty Awards in 2018. He also managed to write content for Huffpost from 2016 to 2018.

Twitch Career

In March 2018, Piker began streaming on Twitch while he was working at TYT. Piker has claimed that he switched his focus from Facebook to Twitch to connect with a younger audience and because he felt that there were too many right-wing commentators on YouTube but not enough leftist streamers. He became well-known as a left-wing political commentator and was asked to appear on Chapo Trap House and The Issue Is on Fox News. Highlights of his streams began to be posted on his YouTube account, which surpassed 1,000,000 subscribers in 2022. Piker also streams video game commentary and gameplay on his Twitch channel. Piker got the most Twitch viewership for the first 2020 presidential debate on September 29, drawing over 125,000 viewers to his commentary of the event.

Piker’s stream covering the results of the 2020 US presidential election peaked at 230,000 concurrent viewers and accounted for 4.9% of the market share as the sixth most watched election coverage source across YouTube and Twitch. During election week, he was the most watched Twitch streamer, with an average of 75,000 concurrent viewers viewing his 80 hours of streaming, which were seen for a total of 6.8 million hours. During the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, Piker’s stream achieved a new high of 231,000 views. Piker, along with CARE, generated more than $200,000 for Ukrainian relief funds while playing Elden Ring during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, with an average of more than 70,000 viewers following the coverage of the conflict.

Political Views

Progressive, leftist, and democratic socialist all have been named for Piker. Piker has linked his wing ideas and willingness to speak out about them to his upbringing in Turkey under the premiership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Piker has been an outspoken critic of both the Democratic and Republican parties and supported Bernie Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 primary campaigns.

Piker said, “What the fuck is up with this dude? ” on Crenshaw.
