Grigor Dimitrov is regarded as the greatest male tennis player from Bulgaria in history. He was born in May 1991 in Haskovo, Bulgaria, and became a professional in 2008 after winning junior Grand Slam championships at the US Open and Wimbledon. In his career to date, Dimitrov has won nine trophies in the singles category. 

By beating Holger Rune in the championship match, he won his seventh title at the Brisbane International in 2024. Dimitrov returns to the top 10 for the first time since November 2018 after reaching the Miami Open final in 2024. He became famous in 2014, reaching the Australian Open quarterfinals and winning three titles on three surfaces (hard, grass, and clay). He advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals before breaking into the top 10.

Dimitrov’s Early Life

Dimitorv’s father, Dimitar, is a tennis coach, and his mother, Maria, is a former volleyball player and sports teacher. The first time he held a tennis racket was at the age of three when it was given to him by his mother. By the time he was five, he was playing the sport daily.

His father was his coach in his formative years, but as he showed his ability in junior competitions, he made it plain that he would need to grow under different circumstances. When Dimitrov was sixteen years old, he went professional.

Dimitrov enrolled at the “Sanchez-Casal” academy in 2007 and received additional training from Pato Álvarez and Emilio Sánchez. Dimitrov began training in Paris, France, in March 2009. There, he enrolled in Patrick Mouratoglou’s tennis academy, where he stayed for the following four seasons until choosing Mouratoglou to be his 2012 coach.

They made their relationship public in 2013 at the Madrid Open and were often seen together supporting each other.

However, Maria realized it was not suitable for her to be in a serious relationship at that moment in her and Dimitrov’s career. Therefore, around the 2015 Wimbledon Championship, the two decided to end their relationship. Maria spoke about her breakup in her autobiography, ‘Unstoppable’ 2017.
